Optical Laser Roughness Measurement
Optical roughness measurement via laser is a non-contact method for quantitatively capturing surface roughness using optical interferometry or triangulation. It is used to inspect surfaces for welding or coating processes.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Laser roughness measurement uses the interference of laser beams reflected from the surface of a material. The phase difference between the incoming and reflected laser light allows quantifying the roughness.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
High surface roughness can lead to increased stress buildup and thus to joint pressure and buckling resistance, which can cause cracks or fractures in the weld joint. Accurate roughness measurement allows taking the necessary actions to minimize the risk of failures.
Shop Practice & Instructions
Use a laser roughness meter with a resolution of at least 0.1 µm. Measure roughness at several points on the surface and take the average. Make sure the measurement is done under consistent conditions (temperature, humidity). If roughness exceeds 0.5 µm, actions such as polishing or coating should be taken.
