Orbital GMAW welding

Orbital GMAW is a mechanized gas metal arc welding process where the torch travels on a guide rail around the circumference of a stationary pipe.

Physical-chemical mechanism of action

The orbital torch moves in a circle around the pipe section. This allows for a uniform weld and improves control over the melt volume.

Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding

Orbital welding reduces stress on the pipe section, which leads to fewer cracks. However, incorrect settings can lead to uneven melting and porosity.

Workshop practice & instructions

Use a guide rail with the correct length and width for the pipe section. Make sure the torch is moved continuously around the pipe circumference. The welding speed should be between 20 and 30 mm/s.
