Orbital Cold Spray Deposition

Orbital cold gas spraying sprays metal particles at supersonic speed onto rotating pipes. This prevents thermal residual stresses and improves surface finish.

Physico-chemical mechanism of action

Orbital cold gas spraying uses a special nozzle to spray metal particles onto the workpiece at speeds of up to 1000 m/s. This happens in a cool environment, so the particles do not melt and hit the material surface directly.

Metallurgical relevance & risks when welding

Orbital cold gas spraying prevents thermal residual stresses in the workpiece because it does not cause surface melting. This reduces susceptibility to cracks and improves weld strength. However, a faulty spray process can lead to uneven surface finish, which can affect the quality of the final product.

Workshop practice & instructions

To use orbital cold gas spraying successfully, it is important that the workpiece is mounted stably and rotating on the machine. The nozzle should be aligned so that the particles hit the desired spot directly. Optimal air pressure and speed regulation are crucial for a uniform surface finish. If you have problems with the finish, check and adjust the spray parameters (pressure, speed).
