Order-Disorder Transition

A phase transformation in solid alloys where atoms occupy regular lattice sites at low temperatures and become statistically distributed at high temperatures. This affects magnetic and mechanical properties.

The order and disorder in the structure depend heavily on temperature control. If you treat the part incorrectly after welding, the structure can flip and you get cracks or lose toughness. Make sure cooling is uniform and controlled. Too fast cooling makes the material hard and brittle, too slow makes the grain coarse and weakens the steel. Stick to the specified interpass temperatures and don't leave the part under tension.
