Oxide Dispersion Strengthened Nickel

A nickel-based composite material in which fine metal oxide particles drastically increase high-temperature strength and creep resistance. It is deployed for turbine blades subject to extreme thermal stress.

When welding ODS nickel, you have to be clear: the fine oxide particles that give the material its high-temperature strength don't survive the melting process. They clump together or get lost, and the weld becomes noticeably softer and more creep-prone than the base metal. There are special filler materials that compensate to some extent, but you'll never get the original strength back at the weld. The weld seam always remains the weak point, so work cleanly and shield it well to prevent additional oxides from getting in. If the components are really designed for full high-temperature load, welding is often the wrong move – better to join mechanically.
