Oxidic purity of steel

Oxide cleanliness of steel is the measure of freedom from non-metallic oxide inclusions. High cleanliness is critical for dynamically loaded parts.

Physico-chemical mechanism of action

Oxide cleanliness refers to the number and size of non-metallic inclusions such as oxygen atoms or other oxides in the steel. These inclusions can form through chemical reactions with the environment, especially when the material is exposed to air or water.

Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding

Low oxide cleanliness can lead to increased corrosion and porosity. This can impair the strength and toughness of the steel, which can be dangerous especially in dynamically loaded components. Additionally, corrosion can lead to cracks and wear.

Workshop practice & instructions

To ensure high oxide cleanliness, it is important to thoroughly clean the steel before welding. This can be achieved through chemical cleaning agents or mechanical polishing methods. Also, the welding process should be carried out in a dry environment to avoid further oxidation. For highly stressed components, it is advisable to use special protective agents such as shielding gases or insulating materials.
