Oxide Dissolving Capacity of Flux

Oxide solubility is the ability of a flux to dissolve metal oxides on the workpiece surface and establish metallic contact with the filler metal. This is crucial for a sound weld.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Oxide solubility refers to the chemical reaction between the flux and the metal oxides on the workpiece surface. The flux binds oxygen, which dissolves the oxides and allows free metallic contact for the solder.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Low oxide solubility can lead to inadequate heating of the workpiece surface, resulting in poor weld quality and possible cracks. A flux with high oxide solubility, on the other hand, prevents porosity and improves weld strength.

Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines

Choose a flux with an oxide solubility that matches the metal being used. For steels with high carbon content (e.g., HSS), high oxide solubility is required to avoid porosity. Regularly check the flux's oxide solubility through lab tests and adjust the flux accordingly.
