Edge oxide layer
Oxide layer on cut edges forms during oxygen or laser cutting and must be removed before coating or welding, as it contaminates the metal and affects quality.
Physico-chemical mechanism
Oxyfuel or laser cutting reacts the metal with air molecules to form a thin layer of metal oxides. This oxide film is a problem for later coatings or welding because it contaminates the surface and reduces bonding.
Metallurgical relevance & welding risks
Oxide scale can lead to corrosion damage and weaken the weld. It prevents good metal-to-metal contact and can cause porosity and hot cracking if not removed.
Workshop practice & procedures
Before coating or welding, strip off the oxide layer completely. Use chemical cleaners like sulfuric acid or mechanical methods like polishing. A thin, clean cut edge is essential for a quality weld.
