Ozone generation during welding
Ozone formation during welding is caused by UV radiation on atmospheric oxygen, especially in aluminum welding. High concentrations irritate mucous membranes and require good ventilation.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
The UV radiation of the arc oxidizes atmospheric oxygen to ozone (O₃). This process is particularly strong when welding aluminum, since aluminum is a good electrolyte and UV radiation easily penetrates.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
High ozone concentrations can irritate the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, and throat, leading to symptoms like pain and choking. In severe cases, this can cause chronic respiratory diseases. In addition, ozone can damage surface materials, which is especially problematic for fine materials like plastics or precious metals, leading to quality issues.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
To minimize ozone formation and improve ventilation, the following measures should be taken:
• Use an effective welding area with good air circulation.
• Install ozone protection masks for the welder.
• Regularly clear and clean the welding area to remove ozone.
• Use special ozone-protective lenses or glasses.
