Flat position (PA)

A welding position where welding is performed from above onto a horizontal surface. It is considered the easiest position because gravity helps keep the molten pool evenly inside the joint.

Flat position welding is the most relaxed position. The puddle lies flat in the joint, gravity works for you, and you can put in plenty of heat. Due to slow cooling, you have fewer problems with hardness and cracking, but be careful not to make the puddle too big, otherwise the grain becomes coarse and the weld tough. Keep the electrode or torch steady and guide evenly. If the plate is thick, it's better to weld multi-pass and let the weld cool in between to avoid too much heat input. For very massive parts, preheating can't hurt, but don't overdo it.
