Passive film

A thin oxide layer on the metal surface that prevents corrosion and protects the material.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The passivation layer forms through a chemical reaction between the metal and its environment. It consists of a stable oxide that blocks contact with the surrounding medium.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

The passivation layer can be preserved with proper welding and extend the material's life. However, it can be destroyed by inadequate cleaning or incorrect welding parameters (e.g., too high temperature), leading to corrosion.

Shop Practice & Instructions

Make sure the metal is cleaned thoroughly before welding. Use appropriate protective measures and pay attention to proper temperature control. If the passivation layer is missing, the material's life can be greatly reduced.
