Overhead position (PE)

Welding from the underside of a workpiece located above the welder. The arc must be kept very short to prevent molten metal from dripping down due to gravity.

When welding in the PE position, you work against gravity – the molten pool tends to run down. Therefore, keep the arc nice and short and guide the electrode steadily to keep the pool small and controlled. Make sure not to put too much heat in, otherwise the pool will drip and you'll get a messy weld. A too long arc is also bad – you lose shielding and the weld becomes porous. Set the current a bit lower than normal and, if possible, use a smaller electrode. Move evenly and don't let the pool get too big – then overhead welding will work.
