Pendulum Hammer

A pendulum hammer is the pivoting drop weight in a pendulum impact testing machine that converts potential energy into kinetic energy. The difference between initial height and rise height after fracture gives the absorbed impact energy.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

A pendulum hammer is released in a pendulum impact testing machine. It falls from a raised position and strikes a specimen plate to convert mechanical energy (potential energy) into kinetic energy. The work transferred to the material during impact can be calculated from the difference between the initial height and the rise height after fracture.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Correct adjustment of the pendulum hammer is critical for reliable testing of mechanical properties. A faulty hammer or incorrect adjustment can lead to inaccurate results, which in turn can lead to misdiagnosis and potential disregard of safety standards.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

1. Make sure the pendulum hammer is correctly adjusted and that the initial height and rise height can be measured.

2. Use precision measurement for the height differences to calculate the impact energy.

3. Regularly check the condition of the pendulum hammer for corrosion or damage and replace it if necessary.
