Peritectic phase transformation
A reaction in which a liquid and a pre-existing solid phase react at constant temperature to form a new, uniform solid phase. It is essential for the solidification behavior of unalloyed steels.
The peritectic transformation is important in steel welding because it strongly influences the structure and thus the properties of the weld. If the cooling is not right, it can lead to cracks or a too hard, brittle structure. Therefore, pay attention to controlled cooling of the weld. For unalloyed steels, this means: do not let it cool too quickly, otherwise the structure becomes too hard. If you have cooling under control, you get a clean, tough structure without nasty surprises.
