Pearlite interlamellar spacing

The pearlite lamellar spacing is the average spacing between cementite lamellae in pearlite. A smaller spacing increases tensile strength but can lead to higher stress buildup.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The pearlite lamellar spacing is the average distance between cementite lamellae in a two-phase pearlite structure. Faster cooling results in denser lamellae, which increases tensile strength.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

A too small pearlite lamellar spacing can lead to increased stress buildup and a higher risk of cracking. This can be particularly problematic for mechanically stressed parts.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

To ensure an optimal pearlite lamellar spacing, pay attention to controlled cooling after welding. Use suitable coolants and avoid rapid cooling steps. A typical pearlite lamellar spacing is about 20-30 µm.
