Lamellar spacing of pearlite

The characteristic distance between the ferrite and cementite lamellae in the pearlitic microstructure, which depends directly on the transformation temperature. Smaller spacings result in higher material strength.

Pearlite is a structure of ferrite and cementite arranged in lamellae. The spacing of the lamellae determines hardness and strength: closely spaced lamellae make the material harder, coarse lamellae softer and tougher. When welding, it's important to control cooling so that a fine pearlite structure forms. If the material cools too slowly, the pearlite becomes coarse and the structure loses strength. So adjust heat input and cooling rate to get a clean, fine structure.
