Personal welding fume exposure monitor
A portable measuring device that measures welding fume and dust directly on the body. It helps with risk assessment under the Hazardous Substances Ordinance.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
A personal welding-fume exposure monitor measures the concentration of contaminants and dust directly on the welder's body. It usually uses optical or electrostatic sensors to pick up fine dust particles and chemical compounds.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Measuring contaminant intake is crucial for the welder's health. Too-high concentrations of dust or toxic gases can lead to lung inflammation, allergies and chronic respiratory disease. The monitor helps you take action to keep exposure down.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Wear the meter somewhere visible on your body, e.g. at the neck or forearm. Start it before the shift and stop it after the shift. Log the results regularly and compare them against the legal limit values. If the readings are above the allowed levels, check the air quality in the shop and take measures to improve it, like installing ventilation or wearing respiratory protection.
