Vertical up position (PF)
Welding from the bottom upwards on a vertical surface. This technique ensures deep penetration but requires precise puddle control to prevent the molten metal from sagging.
When welding uphill, you work against gravity – otherwise the weld pool wants to run toward you. Keep the arc short and oscillate only a little, then the pool stays small and solidifies quickly. If too much heat builds up, you get a coarse structure and the risk of cracks increases. Turn down the amperage, keep the torch slightly tilted upward, and weld in thin layers. For thicker plate, better do multiple layers instead of one wide bead.
