Phased Array Ultrasonic Transducer
A phased array probe has many individually controllable elements that can be electronically steered. This allows precise steering and focusing of the ultrasonic beam without mechanical movement.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
A phased array probe consists of a series of elements that can be activated independently. By delaying the sound pulses in these elements, a focused beam can be created that can be steered in different directions and angles.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
This technique allows very precise scanning of complex weld geometries, such as deep penetration welds or highly curved weld shapes. It can detect the smallest defects and cracks that would not be visible with conventional probes. However, incorrect use or faulty calibration can lead to inaccurate results, which in turn leads to errors in quality assurance.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
To use a phased array probe effectively, the elements must be correctly calibrated and synchronized. The inspection should be carried out in a quiet environment to minimize interference. It is important that the operator familiarizes themselves with the specific settings and parameters of the probe to achieve optimal results.
