Phased Array Testing on Austenitic Welds
Phased array testing uses special ultrasonic technique with low-frequency matrix to minimize strong sound scattering and aberration in coarse-grained austenitic weld structures. This improves detection accuracy for lack of fusion and cracks.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism
Phased array testing uses low-frequency matrix ultrasound to send sound waves in different directions. This minimizes sound scattering and aberrations in coarse-grained austenitic structures, which improves the detection of flaws and cracks.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
In austenitic welds, the coarse grain structure can cause strong sound scattering. This can cause flaws and cracks to not be sharply identified. Phased array testing minimizes these issues and increases testing accuracy.
Workshop Practice & Action Steps
Use an ultrasonic device with a phased array matrix for austenitic welds. Set the frequency low (approx. 1-2 MHz) and orient the matrix so it sends sound waves in different directions. Testing should be done at least every 5 cm to ensure no flaws or cracks are missed.
