Phosphorus Grain Boundary Segregation

Phosphorus grain boundary segregation: phosphorus atoms collect at grain boundaries during slow cooling, increasing the tendency to fracture.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

Phosphorus grain-boundary segregation occurs when phosphorus atoms gather at the grain boundaries of the metal during slow cooling. This leads to a local change in chemical composition and mechanical properties.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

This segregation can increase the tendency for intergranular fracture, which can lead to cracks and failures. This effect is particularly significant in high-phosphorus steels.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

To avoid phosphorus grain-boundary segregation, control the cooling rate. For high-phosphorus steels, a fast and controlled cooling is required. Use special cooling methods or coolants for this purpose.
