Phosphorus-Containing Copper Brazing Filler

Phosphorus-containing copper brazing alloy is a self-fluxing filler metal that uses phosphorus as a reducing agent and melting point depressor. It suits copper materials well but not ferrous alloys due to brittle phosphide formation.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Phosphorus reduces iron ore in the melt and lowers the melting point of copper. This improves the fluidity and weldability of the braze.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

On iron-containing alloys, phosphorus can lead to brittle phosphides, which compromises the hardness and strength of the weld. This can lead to cracks and deformations.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

Use phosphorus-containing copper brazing alloy only for pure copper or copper alloys without iron. For iron-containing alloys, choose a different brazing alloy that does not form brittle phosphides.
