Photoelectric Ionization

Photoelectric ionization is the process by which electrons are released by high-energy radiation and contribute to stabilizing the discharge process.

Physico-chemical mechanism of action

Photoelectric ionization occurs when electrons in a material are released by high-energy radiation (e.g., UV light). These released electrons contribute to the discharge and improve the stability of the arc.

Metallurgical relevance & risks when welding

Adequate photoelectric ionization is crucial for a stable discharge and a good welding process. Lack of ionization can lead to instabilities in the arc, irregular currents, and poorer welding results.

Shop practice & instructions

Make sure the arc is correctly set to ensure adequate ionization. Regularly check the energy settings and the condition of the light shield. If problems occur with the discharge or the welding result, it can be helpful to increase the ionization level.
