Pockmark Defect
Pickling defects are local surface irregularities that occur during thermal treatment or coating. They can promote corrosion.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
Pickling defects form through microscopic stresses and deformation in the metal structure during welding or coating. These can lead to local raised or sunken spots.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Pickling defects can act as starting points for corrosion, since they enlarge the contact area between metal and environment. That can lead to accelerated rusting or corrosion, which shortens the part's service life.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
To avoid pickling defects, keep the surface clean before welding and coating. Use high-quality protective agents and make sure the weld cools evenly. Any pickling defects found should be removed before coating.
