Step-back welding sequence
Pilgrim step welding sequence: Sequential welding of staggered segments to reduce longitudinal stresses in long butt welds.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Staggered welding reduces longitudinal stresses by welding sections sequentially, offset by a fixed distance. This prevents simultaneous stress accumulation across the entire weld length.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Incorrect application can cause stress concentrations, leading to cracks or distortion. It's crucial to tightly control the spacing between sections and the cooling time.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
• Spacing of sections: 10 to 20 mm depending on steel type and weld length.
• Cooling time: At least 30 seconds per welding step to relieve stresses.
• Temperature control: Keep the temperature steady during welding.
