Step-back welding method
Pilgrim step welding method divides long welds into short, staggered sections. This avoids heat peaks and minimizes distortion. It is especially used for critical vessels.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism
Staggered welding breaks long welds into short, offset segments. This prevents heat buildup and reduces the risk of overheating. Quick cooling between segments prevents the formation of brittle martensite.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks
Long, continuous welds can cause overheating, leading to severe distortion and increased risk of cracking. Staggered welding avoids these by controlling the peak temperature in the weld zone.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use staggered welding for critical vessels and long welds. Divide the weld into sections of about 10 cm in length, with an offset of at least 5 cm between sections. Keep the cooling time between sections short to avoid martensite. Monitor the weld zone temperature continuously.
