Step-back welding
Pilgrim step welding is a welding sequence where short sections are welded against the direction of progress. This distributes heat more evenly and reduces distortion.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism
In staggered welding, the workpiece is welded in short, small steps against the usual direction of travel. This spreads heat evenly across the piece, preventing sharp temperature differences between weld segments.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks
Even heat distribution prevents stress concentrations that can cause cracks and distortion. It also reduces shrinkage and improves the weld's mechanical properties.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
For successful staggered welding, follow these guidelines:
• Use a short step length (about 1-2 mm).
• Keep the heat source (e.g., TIG torch) at the same height as the workpiece.
• Ensure constant, even travel speed.
• Continuously monitor temperature and distortion.
