Plasma gas
Plasma gas is the ionized, dissociated gas in the arc that forms the plasma jet. It consists of gases like argon, nitrogen, or oxygen and is adjusted depending on the material.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
Plasma gas forms through the ionization of gases in the arc, where electrons are split off from atoms. This leads to the formation of a hot, electric plasma with a high temperature gradient.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Plasma gas has a high temperature and can show strongly oxidizing properties. Wrong gas choice or ratios can lead to insufficient fusion, pore formation and changed material properties.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use argon gas for steel, since it is oxidation-resistant. For alloyed metals or plastics, nitrogen or an oxygen mixture can be used. Pay attention to correct gas pressure and flow regulation in the range of 10 to 25 liters per minute.
