Plasma instability

Plasma instability is non-uniform ionization of the arc, leading to spattery welding and irregular material distribution.

Physicochemical Mechanism

Plasma instability arises from fluctuations in the ionization channel of the arc. These cause uneven light output and thus variable welding speed and temperature.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Irregular material distribution can lead to uneven stresses in the weld, which can cause cracks and distortion. Spattering increases the risk of porosity and reduces the mechanical strength of the weld.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

To minimize plasma instability, ensure a stable power supply and correct gas ratios. Use a stabilized arc or high-quality welding torch. Keep the hand steady and avoid rapid movements of the tool.
