Plasma Nitriding
Plasma nitriding is a thermochemical surface treatment using low-pressure glow discharge plasma that increases the wear and corrosion resistance of steels.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
Plasma nitriding creates a thin, hard layer on the material surface by applying a low-pressure glow discharge plasma. This plasma consists of ionized atoms and free electrons that hit the surface and cause chemical reactions with the metal.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
The increased hardness and corrosion resistance of the plasma-nitrided surface improves the service life of components in harsh environments. However, the thin, hard layer can be easily damaged by careless welding, leading to a reduction in the effects.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Before welding plasma-nitrided steels, they should be carefully pretreated and stripped. The weld should be at least 5 mm away from the edge to protect the surface layer. Use a controlled cooling method during cooling to keep the structure undamaged.
