Plasma cutting gas nitrogen

Nitrogen is used as the plasma gas in plasma cutting to melt metals and produce oxide-free cut edges. It significantly increases cutting speed.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Nitrogen is an inert gas that ionizes at high temperature in a plasma cutter and melts metal through thermal energy. It prevents oxidation of the weld by blocking oxygen.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Using nitrogen prevents porosity and improves edge toughness. Too little nitrogen can lead to insufficient oxidation, causing poor cut quality and possible cracks.

Workshop Practice & Procedures

Always use a gas mix with at least 95% nitrogen for plasma cutting. Make sure the gas flows well through the electrode and avoids porosity in the material.
