Plasma cutting pilot arc

The plasma cutting pilot arc is an auxiliary arc placed between the electrode and the nozzle. It ionizes the plasma gas before the main cutting process and ensures reliable ignition.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The pilot arc generates an electric field that ionizes the plasma gas. This process forms the basis for the subsequent main cutting process.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

A missing or insufficient pilot arc can lead to difficulties in ignition. This can cause delays in the welding process and potentially lead to incomplete weld seams.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Make sure the pilot arc is correctly set and activated. Regularly check the intensity of the arc and adjust it as needed.
