Plastic Microstrain

Plastic microstrain is a local, irreversible deformation in the grain structure that increases dislocation density and hardens the metal.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Plastic micro-strain occurs due to mechanical loading, where the atomic structure of the metal is irreversibly deformed. This leads to an increased dislocation density within the grains.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

High plastic micro-strain can strengthen the metal, but it can also cause cracks and hardness issues. Excessive strain can worsen the grain structure, impairing the material's toughness.

Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines

To control plastic micro-strain, pay attention to optimal welding parameters. Use suitable shielding gases and avoid excessive loads. For heavy materials or high stresses, careful control of strain is essential.
