Cladding

Inseparable bonding of a corrosion-resistant material to a high-strength base metal via rolling, explosion bonding, or weld overlay.

Plating means applying a corrosion-resistant material to a base material. You do this by rolling, explosive cladding, or weld cladding. The base material is usually a high-strength steel that would rust or oxidize without the layer. It is important that the layer is applied cleanly and pore-free. If something is wrong there, you get corrosion under the layer, leading to cracks and spalling. So make sure the surface is clean and the layer bond is proper, then the part will last.
