Cladding shear strength testing
The cladding shear strength test checks the mechanical bond between base material and cladding by applying shear force until fracture.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
The test determines how strongly the plating is bonded to the base material at the interface. A parallel shear force is applied until the bond at the interface breaks.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Weak shear strength can lead to cracks and wear issues. With a poor bond, corrosion effects can also occur because the plating is not fully protected.
Workshop Practice & Action Instructions
The test is carried out when selecting plating materials and processes. If a premature fracture occurs, other materials or processes must be tested.
