Cladding Shear Bond Strength

The mechanical resistance of a metallurgical cladding to displacement parallel to the interface with the base material. It is a critical quality factor for thermally or explosively manufactured clad plates.

The shear strength of the cladding tells you how well the top layer holds onto the base material when you try to shift it sideways. When welding, you have to be careful not to tear the bond or have the layers separate. Clean, grease-free surfaces are the be-all and end-all, and the heat must be managed so that the bond doesn't suffer. If the cladding doesn't adhere well, you'll get cracks or the sheet will peel off.
