Pneumatic Impact Treatment

A mechanical post-treatment process in which weld transitions are processed using high-frequency, pneumatically driven needles. This leads to local deformation, notch smoothing, and the build-up of beneficial compressive residual stresses.

Pneumatic needle hammering (PIT) smooths the weld surface and introduces compressive residual stresses into the material. This makes the weld less sensitive to fatigue cracks and increases the fatigue strength. You move the tool evenly over the weld and the transition to the base material. Too much pressure or working too long in one spot damages the structure – you can provoke cracks or hardening. Better to work in several calm passes than to go full force.
