Primary austenite
The first phase that crystallizes from the liquid phase during the slow cooling of hypoeutectoid iron-carbon melts. It forms the dendritic backbone from which subsequent microstructures evolve.
When the melt cools, austenite forms first, serving as the framework for the final structure. If you cool too fast, you get a hard, crack-prone structure. If it's too slow, the grain coarsens and toughness suffers. So you have to control cooling so the structure stays clean and tough.
