Sample Surface

The specimen surface is the machined and prepared outer side of the test piece. It must be smooth and flat enough to allow precise hardness testing.

Physicochemical mechanism of action

The sample surface is prepared by mechanical processing such as polishing or roughening. This removes surface defects and increases flatness, which improves the accuracy of hardness testing.

Metallurgical relevance & risks during welding

An insufficiently smooth sample surface can lead to missing or inconsistent hardness readings. This can result in incorrect quality assessments and product issues.

Workshop practice & instructions

The sample surface should be prepared according to the manufacturer's instructions. For hardness testing, a surface roughness of 0.4 µm to 1.6 µm is typical. Use high-quality polishing compounds and ensure even polishing without over-polishing.
