Specimen preparation

The mechanical machining of the test surface to remove surface deformation and ensure a uniform surface for optical hardness testing.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Sample preparation involves cutting, grinding, and polishing the test surface. This removes mechanical deformation and creates a smooth surface required for accurate optical hardness testing.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Edge deformation can lead to inaccurate hardness readings. Faulty sample preparation can prevent the actual hardness of the material from being measured correctly, leading to errors in material selection and treatment.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Use fine grinding materials and polishing compounds. The test surface should be prepared at least 1 mm around the measurement point to ensure that no edge deformation affects the hardness measurement.
