Penetrant Residues
Test material residues are incompletely removed chemical compounds on the component surface that can impair manufacturing steps.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
Testing agent residues (Penetrant Residues) are chemical compounds or residues that remain on the surface of the component during the testing process. These can consist of the testing agents themselves or their residues and remain on the surface after testing.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
These residues can affect the quality of subsequent manufacturing steps, especially during welding. They can contaminate the molten pool, leading to uneven melting and causing porosity or unevenness in the weld. Furthermore, they can disrupt the chemical reactions in the molten pool and affect the microstructure of the material.
Workshop Practice & Action Instructions
To avoid testing agent residues, the surface of the component must be carefully cleaned after each test. This can be achieved by removing all liquids and residues with a suitable cleaning agent. It is important that the surface is completely dry before proceeding to the next manufacturing step. Before welding, a thorough intermediate cleaning should be carried out before applying the welding protective coating.
