Powder Flowability
Powder flowability is the ability of the metal powder to distribute evenly and smoothly on the build platform. This is crucial for a consistent layer density and is influenced by particle size, shape, and moisture.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
Powder flowability describes how metal powder spreads over a surface. This depends on the particle morphology (shape and structure), the particle sizes and the moisture content. Even spreading and smooth distribution lead to a homogeneous layer density.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Poor powder flowability can lead to uneven powder layers, pore formation and irregular layer thicknesses. This raises the likelihood of cracks and reduces the toughness of the weld. It can also cause distortion or unevenness in the component structure.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
To ensure good powder flowability, take these measures:
1. Use powder with a homogeneous particle size distribution and suitable moisture content.
2. Make sure the build platform is clean and smooth.
3. Regularly check the powder amount and its distribution on the platform.
4. Use suitable welding equipment and methods to ensure even layer formation.
