Submerged Arc Welding

Submerged arc welding is a welding process with an arc under powder that enables high deposition rates on thick-walled components and prevents air contamination.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The arc burns in a layer of granular welding flux, which completely blocks air from entering. This ensures a clean weld zone and improves deposition efficiency.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

The high deposition rate allows welding of thick-walled components with low distortion. However, missing flux or poor flux distribution can lead to uneven melting and cracks.

Workshop Practice & Action Items

Always use a sufficient amount of flux with the correct size grade. Ensure the flux is well distributed with no voids. Keep the arc tip about 2-3 mm away from the workpiece.
