Powder Bed Oxidation Tendency
The tendency of powder metals to oxidize when shielding is inadequate leads to embrittlement and low elongation.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Reactive metals in the powder bed react quickly with oxygen from the air. This can lead to rapid embrittlement of the powder particles, impairing their mechanical properties.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
A high tendency to oxidation can cause embrittlement of the powder. This coarsens the structure and reduces the elongation at break of the weld, leading to cracks and low strength.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
To minimize oxidation, the build chamber must be well inertized. This can be achieved by sufficient gas exchange. A typical inertization time is 15-20 minutes at an oxygen content below 0.1 vol%. The powder and the welding equipment should be thoroughly cleaned before use.
