Powder Bed Fusion

Powder bed fusion is a manufacturing process where a powder material is melted and built up layer by layer into complex parts.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

A powder bed consists of a fine, homogeneous mixture of metal particles and binders. Under the influence of thermal energy, this powder melts in layers. This enables precise control of the build-up and dimensioning of components.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

The selection of the powder grade and binder influences the melting properties. Incorrect values can lead to uneven melt distribution or excessive stresses, which can result in component defects such as cracks or distortion.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Use a powder bed with the correct metal particles and binders. Set the temperature and time for melting precisely to ensure uniform melting. Continuously monitor the process and adjust parameters if necessary.
