Powder Bed Density Optimization
Adjust recoater speed and particle sizes to achieve uniform packing density.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Powder bed density optimization refers to controlling the speed and size of powder particles deposited onto the melt pool. A homogeneous deposition density ensures that the melt is evenly distributed across the entire bed cross-section, leading to better contact between melt and metal.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Non-uniform powder bed density can lead to material waste, irregular melting behavior, and lack of contact areas between melt and metal. This increases the likelihood of porosity and reduces weld strength.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
To achieve optimal powder bed density, set the recoater speed to approximately 10-20 cm/s. Particle sizes should be between 50 and 100 µm. Regular monitoring of deposition density through visual inspection or sensors is essential to ensure consistent values.
