Point defect concentration

The number of vacancies and interstitial atoms per unit volume that influence diffusion and deformation.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

Point defects are atomic disturbances like vacancies or interstitial atoms. They affect the movement of atoms (diffusion) and the plastic deformation of the material.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

A high concentration of point defects can lead to increased strength, which at overcritical temperature can cause crack-sensitive microstructure formation (martensite). This can negatively affect the mechanical properties and service life of the weld.

Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines

To achieve a favorable point defect concentration, pay attention to correct welding parameters like temperature and time. Use appropriate shielding gas mixtures and avoid rapid cooling steps.
