Horizontal position
Horizontal position is a horizontal weld on a vertical wall where the molten pool must be supported against gravity.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The horizontal position requires special positioning of the tool and the weld pool. The weld pool is arranged horizontally to overcome gravity and distribute the weld material evenly on the wall.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Incorrect positioning can make the weld pool insufficiently stable, leading to uneven welding and increasing the likelihood of porosity and cracking. Lack of stabilization measures can also cause the weld pool to sag or deform.
Workshop Practice & Action Instructions
To ensure a successful horizontal position, the weld pool must be firmly mounted on the wall. This can be done using supports, clamping bands, or special fixtures. The temperature of the weld pool should be regularly monitored and maintained to ensure even welding. A missing pressure regulator can cause the weld pool to be insufficiently stable.
