Transverse Crack

A transverse crack is a separation crack that runs perpendicular to the welding direction and is caused by high constraint stresses.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

A transverse crack forms when stresses in the weld are too high. These stresses can arise from inadequate cooling or excessive loads.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Transverse cracks lead to low toughness and increase the risk of hot cracking. They can also cause deterioration of the material's mechanical properties, which is critical in high-stress applications.

Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines

To avoid transverse cracks, ensure careful cooling of the weld. Use suitable shielding and protect the weld from mechanical loads. For high stresses, choosing the right steel or using stress-limiting methods can also help.
