Fatigue Striations are macroscopic lines on the fatigue fracture surface that indicate arrest periods or load cycle changes. They document the stepwise advance of the crack front.
Physico-chemical mechanism of action
Fatigue Striations are formed by repeated loading and unloading of a material, leading to microscopic damage. This damage accumulates into macroscopic lines on the fracture surface.
Metallurgical relevance & welding risks
Fatigue Striations can occur under uneven loading or lack of stress relief. They increase the susceptibility to fatigue fractures and can lead to crack propagation, especially at high temperatures.
Workshop practice & action instructions
To minimize Fatigue Striations, ensure even loading and regular stress relief. When welding, use a constant temperature and avoid rapid temperature changes. If Fatigue Striations are visible, a detailed fatigue test is required.
